Abu Bakr Sasi Al-Maghribi – May Allah have mercy on him

Sheikh Abu Bakr Sassi (1917–2009) was a prominent Libyan calligrapher born in the Old City of Tripoli. He combined religious studies with the art of Arabic calligraphy, which he mastered at the Royal School of Calligraphy in Egypt, earning his diploma in 1943. He gained international recognition for writing the “Jamahiriya Mushaf” (completed in 1983), which is distinguished as the world’s first Quran written in the Qalun via Nafi’ recitation according to the Ottoman orthography and the method of Abu Amr al-Dani. Throughout his life, he served the Holy Quran as a member of several committees for Quranic review and radio recitation supervision until he passed away at the age of 92, leaving behind a monumental legacy in the history of Islamic calligraphy.
